Renting/Purchasing a violin/viola:
Renting an instrument is always recommended for a beginner. Often, a beginner student is not ready (size-wise) for a full size instrument, so rental of a smaller size (1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 size) is the way to go. **Be sure to BRING YOUR CHILD with you to the store, as they will need to be measured for the correct instrument size. Rentals will include an instrument case, rosin, instrument insurance and the option to exchange for the next size up as needed. Also, many of the instrument stores have purchase plans available after the first year of rental.

Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace - be very cautious with "cheap or free" violins/violas listed on local selling sites. Not all instruments are the same and purchasing a low quality instrument will only make it harder for your child to progress. Certainly, a good find is possible, but it is ALWAYS a good idea to have the instrument looked over by a string technician before you purchase.

Instrument Assessment/Repair:
In the event that you have an old violin/viola passed down or given to you, please have the instrument checked over (and any needed repairs made) prior to lessons beginning. If the instrument is the correct size for your child and is in good working order, than the instrument can be used for lessons. If this fits your situation, please check out the link below.
